The Famous Italian-American sculptor Arieto Bertoia (born in 1915) moved to the US with his family in 1930. His name in the US was Americanized to „Harry“.
After studying fine arts he began his design work with jewelery in the 1930ies and 1950ies. In 1950 he engaged with Knoll on invitation from Hans and Florence Knoll to design several furniture that would become icons of the period.
Characteristic for his work is the metal structures forming grids and patterns. Mostly he used metal to bend and weld his furniture designs realized by Knoll.
In 1952 the Diamond chair series was introduced into the market. It was available in several sizes and versions and different upholstery types, with its most prominent fabric Cato. Cato composed from wool and rayon has a traditional weave from strong wool material resulting in a large grid which gives it it‘s remarkable structure. Cato has ever since been the most expensive upholstery type offered by Knoll for most products. The Diamond chair series was manufactured by Knoll in the US and in Europe.
This edition is manufactured by Knoll International in the late 1970ies or early 1980ies, with it’s makers bedge in the seat cover.
The chair’s metal structure is in good to very good vintage condition, with some signs of age and wear. The cover has slight signs of wear but hardly any stains. folds in the seat.
