In 1952, Gio Ponti and Cesare Cassina formed a partnership. This collaboration led them to work on various projects, including the creation of the Leggera chair. However, a previous project involving the Superleggera chair sparked the idea for the Leggera.
The inspiration for the Superleggera chair dates back even further. The concept of a super lightweight chair originated from the Chiavari chair, traditionally made in the village of Chiavari. Ponti was fascinated by these chairs’ durability, stability, light structure, and affordability. This fascination inspired him to develop an improved version, eventually becoming the Leggera chair. It took five years of dedicated effort before the design became a reality.
