Conceived in 1953, Wegner conceived the design after a talk with Professor of Architecture Steen Eiler Rasmussen and designer Bo Bojesen about the problems in folding clothes in the most practical manner at bedtime.
With The Valet Chair, Wegner united that practical function with a whimsical sculptural design. The top rail is shaped as a coat hanger while the seat is for storage.
The design had not yet been completed when the Danish King Frederik IX ordered one after seeing the first four-legged version. He ended up ordering ten chairs, after waiting two years for the finalized design.
