The authentic cobra table lamp is of the most iconic designs by Greta M. Grossman. The table lamp was originally designed in the 1950s and takes its name from the shape of the oval shade, which is reminiscent of a cobra’s neck. Due to its ground breaking design, the cobra table lamp won the good design award in the same decade and was subsequently exhibited at the good design show at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

The cobra table lamp is a classic and yet unique lamp that with its tubular flexible arm can be bent in all directions, allowing the shade to be rotated through 360º. This creates a wide range of lighting options for either the work desk or a soft light in the living room.

A collector’s Grade pair of Greta M Grossman cobra table lamps with labels intact. In 1950 Grossman won the ‘Good Design Award’ for her cobra lamp and it was subsequently displayed at the MoMA in NY. The paint on these examples is extraordinarily clean and both are all original. The lamps retain their patent number tags and the Ralph O Smith labels. One lamp also has the ‘Good Design’ label in place as well. You will likely not find a cleaner, all original matched pair of these fixtures anywhere on the planet.

Rare Enameled Aluminum Cobra Table Lamp by Greta Magnusson Grossman

This lamp is a variant of the “Cobra” lamp which won the Good Design award in 1950 and was exhibited at the Good Design Show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. These lamps were originally designed for Barker Brothers but were later produced by Ralph O. Smith. The lamps proved iconic due to their bullet-shaped shades and flexible arms. Made of enameled aluminum on a chrome-plated steel base with one cone shade and one “Cobra” shade. This one was manufactured by Ralph O. Smith, California, circa 1950.
About the designer:
Grossman is a designer with serious accolades. She was the first woman to graduate from the Stockholm School of Industrial Design, the first women to be awarded by the Swedish Craft Association for furniture design, the first women to own and operate a furniture studio.
She worked in both the United States and in Sweden. Grossman not only created successful products for such companies like Glenn of California, Sherman Bertram, Martin/Brattrud and Modern Line but also had private clients like Greta Garbo, Joan Fontaine and Gracie Allen.

An award-winning 1948 design by Swedish-American Greta Grossman for Ralph O. Smith, a California-based lighting company. The lamp, colloquially known as the “Cobra” for its uniquely shaped shade that resembles a cobra’s hood, is counterweighted with a segmented arm curving upward from a round base. The oblong shade slants gently from the arm to its outer edge. Light is controlled by a push button on/off switch on base. Retains the original Good Design label inside the shade.

Condition: Vintage condition; professionally cleaned. Some scratches, appropriate to the age and use of the piece, can be observed on the enamel. While we do not guarantee vintage electrical components, the wiring has been tested and is in working order.

Dimensions: The lamp is 14.5” deep x 11.5” wide x 15” tall, but the versatile adjustable arm extends up to 22.5” tall.
