Originally designed for his friend and patron Lloyd Lewis in 1939 (see images of the Kathryn and Lloyd Lewis House in Mettawa, Illinois, 1939, included here), this low coffee table in cherry wood speaks to FLW’s revolutionary insight and alternative perspective as to the organization of space, one in which the tops seem to be suspended in air, to create a single dynamic whole.
The square tables consist of six pieces: two horizontals at top and bottom, into which are slotted four verticals, in the interior of which is a surface onto which objects can be placed. This composition creates a dynamic where the horizontals seem to float in mid-air. By means of this idea, Frank Lloyd Wright pushed back the frontiers of architecture and hinted at an alternative way in which space might be organised.
It became one of Wright’s favorite furniture designs as he would include variations of it in the Quintin and Ruth Blair Residence, Cody, Wyoming (1952), Paul and Ida Trier Residence, Johnston, Iowa (1956), among others. Produced by Cassina and Frank Lloyd Foundation in 1996 to the early 2000’s. No longer in production. Cherry wood with semi-gloss original finish. Made in Italy.
