These striking table lamps are the iconic Bourgie Lamp by Italian designer Ferruccio Laviani (b. 1960), manufactured by Milan-based furniture company Kartell. Inspired by Ashford and Simpson’s 1977 disco hit “Bourgie, Bourgie,” the lamp was first designed in 2003 as a playful commentary on modern consumerism and the relationship between luxury design and mass-market manufacturing.
The lamp’s modern design is sculpted of batch-dyed polycarbonate with opaque black color and a glossy finish. A “pleated” round shade shields three bulbs and is elevated by a baroque style tripod base, designed to resemble an ornate, hand-turned wooden form. Cast in plastic with a flattened, two-dimensional form, the sculptural base cheekily contrasts its mundane material against the opulence of its showy form. Playing with both modern and traditional designs, these Bourgie Lamps find their place in any interior and offer an ideal way to decorate a desk, side table or nightstand.
