Originally designed in 1953 by possibly the greatest of all Dutch mid-century designers, Friso Kramer, and created for renowned furniture maker Ahrend de Cirkel The Revolt was intended as a cost effective, durable and esthetically pleasing mass producible chair to be used in offices, schools and other public spaces. Now, nearly 70 years after it was made available to the market The “Revolt” is widely considered by the Dutch to be nothing less than a perfect chair that effortlessly combines comfort with strength and looks. Its success can partially can be attributed to the, at that time, new system of folding sheet steel that was developed for the construction of this chair. When combined with the nylon fiber seating, the steel allowed the chair to be both remarkably light and flexible. It was a break through and confirmed Kramer as a leading voice in the emerging Dutch post-war design industry.
