The DAF chair is perfectly suitable as a dining chair and due to it’s organic design will fit perfectly to large dining tables of the period.
The DAF Chair fiberglass with it’s beautiful organic seat shell was designed by George Nelson in 1958. It was introduced in 1958 and has been in production until 1964.
The two-parted seat shell consists of the backrest and seat, both glued under the arm rests, where the segments meet. The seat shells are mounted on coated Herman Miller La Fonda bases, designed by Charles & Ray Eames for Herman Miller in 1961.
All six chairs marked with the „C“ and 3-star stamp as well as with the embossed Herman Miller Logo, which was in use for Cincinatti Milacron productions of the DAF chair. Cincinatti Milacron was the manufacturing company for the seat shells for Herman Miller in this period. This set of DAF chairs, considering the introduction of the La Fonda into the market in 1961 as well as the production time of the DAF chair ending in 1964, can be dated between 1961-1964.
All 6 Chairs are in overall good vintage condition with signs of use appropriate to age and wear. The fiberglass seat shells are without damages. they show signs of use. scratches can be found especially in the area of the arm rests and seats. The shells show slight patina. one chair‘s back test shows a more intense patina in the rear side of the back rest. All glides of the bases remain in good vintage condition. No restorations have been made.
Nelson and his Studio would not only design numerous furniture pieces for Herman Miller. George Nelson also was prominent and very influential as the curated of Herman Miller inviting some of the most influential predecessors in the field.
Herman Milller in those years was one of the most innovative companies in furniture design and the DAF Chair is one of the icons of mid-century modern furniture.
